- This is a self-unstuffing archive containing three files:
- *"Postcards Demo" (368K)
- *"Postcards ad" (59K)
- *"Read Me" (5K)
-
- "Postcards Demo" is a demo of "Postcards for Shanghai II," a trio
- of scanned, photographic-quality tilesets for use with Shanghai II.
- The tilesets--Beasts, Landmarks and Tropics--include sounds,
- animations, and informational blurbs about each tile. To use the
- demo, you'll need version 1.03 of Shanghai II. An updater to
- version 1.03 is here on sumex-aim This version adds a feature
- and fixes some bugs (including the background-beep bug and the
- tournament score bug).
-
- "Postcards ad" displays and can print an ad/order form for
- "Postcards for Shanghai II."
-
- "Read Me" contains instructions and details about the other two
- files.

-
- DepthCharge 1.7
-
- I am posting this on behalf of the friend of mine in England who wrote it.
-
- This extension allows you to quickly and simply change the monitor setting
- without all the bother of having to open up the monitors control panel.
- Just click the mouse button anywhere while holding down a (user-specified)
- combination of modifier keys, and a popup menu appears allowing you to change:
-
- 1. The bit depth of the screen (number of colours or greys), and
- 2. Whether the monitor is set to colour or grey-scale.
-
- It is almost identical in operation to the similar 'RadiusWare' utility,
- but of course this one does not require that your Mac has a Radius monitor
- plugged into it.
-
- This extension has been tested successfully with System 6.0.7 and System 7.
-
- Version 1.7 now also allows changing of the control panel sound volume
- setting.

-
- There has been a lot of discussion about Empire Master on the
- news lists recently and people have been asking where the demo
- version went. It seems that the sumex-aim archives are purged
- >From now and then.
-
- So here it is again, the latest released Empire Master demo.
- This is a strategic two player wargame where you start with one
- city, capture more and try to conquer the world.
-
- The demo version includes the complete game, but you cannot
- save and restore partway through. It also forces you to deal
- with a completely obnoxious dialog when you quit.
-
- The order form indicates that prices are valid until July
- 1992, but the given prices will be honored at least until
- november and at most the price will go up $2.

- 1-D Chaos Explorer v0.1b
- 1992 by Matthew Hall
-
- Enclosed is a binhexed, self extracting archive containing 1-d
- Chaos explorer and related files. This latest release fixes a
- bug in the earlier version which caused the display on black
- and white monitors to be rather, well, unpleasant. Also is
- included, by popular (1 vote) demand, a non-fpu version of the
- program and some additional help.
-
- 1-D Chaos Explorer is an application designed to explore the
- dynamics of functions on the real line. It allows you to type
- in any function of one variable (and a parameter) and will
- let you explore such topics as chaos, period doubling, Cantor
- sets (fractals) and others through a variety of graphs and
- plots (plain graph, orbital densities, escape times and the
- ever popular bifurcation plot). Also includes ability to
- perform Newton's method.
-
- This application was designed to give an intuitive feel for
- dynamics on the real line, and I hope, is a good introduction
- to chaos for high school level math and up
-
- This application will work on any computer. Another version
- is included to take advantage of computers equipped with a
- math coprocessor. Will run in limited color on color
- Macintoshes, includes on-line help, and programming help to
- let you include your own plug-in (read 'much faster than
- interpreted') functions. 1-D Chaos Explorer is Shareware.
- If you keep it, like it, and especially if you learn something
- >From it, please send $5 or $10.

-
- This is a binhexed-stuffed (v3.0) archive containing an enhanced
- version of an Apple code snippet by Steve Falkenburg, of MacDTS.
- Includes source code, think C project and the sample app.
- It adds a part to the window. That is a new box is added to the
- title bar, and you can click on it. It works with the current
- WDEF, whatever it is, may it be the Sys6, Sys7, Stretch Init,
- etc... one, since it uses the code of the original WDEF you were
- using, and does not provide a new one, then adds new behaviour.
- This version differs from the original one in the sense that it
- tracks the added part, instead of simply reporting that the user
- clicked inside. This is much more consistent with the rest of the
- user interface. There's still room for improvements.
- Use it just as it were the original snippet.

- SERVICE NOTICE: 20MB/40MB HARD DRIVE REPAIR EXTENSION PROGRAM
-
- ( Copyright 1991, Apple Computer Inc.)
-
-
- OVERVIEW
-
- We have discovered that a certain batch of half-height internal 3.5" 20MB and
- 40MB hard drives and some external 3.5" 20MB and 40MB drives may have been
- subjected to disk media contamination. These drives may experience a number of
- different symptoms, as fully described later on in this notice. To address this
- problem, Apple is offering a 20MB/40MB Hard Drive Repair Extension Program for
- customers and Service Providers with drives manufactured four years ago or
- later that meet all the criteria below. A new drive, P/N 661-1629, has been
- substituted for the problem drives.

- DeskWriter C using an AppleTalk network. These machines will not have
- slots available for connection to the campus-wide Ethernet (and the

- The Question
- ============
-
- Does anyone out there have experience with the type of setup I've described

- In my most recent Microsoft newsletter there was a little article about setting
- the default font for Excel (I, along with many others, was surprised that
- Microsloth added style sheets to Excel, but no provision for saving one as a
- default! Excel 4 is the same! Why this is, I do not know...)
-
- I personally like using 10 point Univers in my spreadsheets and was glad to see
- that something could be done besides manually changing each new sheet. They
- said to set up a document they way I wanted it, and save it as a template with
- the name "Worksheet" in my Excel folder (which is in my "prefs" folder, I
- believe). This way, whenever I want a new file, this will override the usual
- "Worksheet" in the dialog box. No such luck. Now I have two "Worksheet"
- choices. The first is the regular one, the bottom one is my modified one. So if
- I do my usual, command-n-w (new; worksheet) I still get one with Geneva 10pt.
- Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? The template shows up in the dialog box, but
- it doesn't replace, as the newsletter said, the old choice.

-
- The ongoing discussion about font technology usage and preferences has finally
- provoked me into advertising my choices:
-
- I have always had a very healthy respect for Adobe technology and have
- despaired of Apple's several unnecessarily stupid decisions to indulge in
- *Type Battles* in preference to adopting the best technology: PostScript
- and Display PostScript.
- Armed with this prejudice and an awareness of the pecking order in which
- PostScript printers deal with fonts, I have chosen to cast my lot with
- Type 1 technology, and more particularly Adobe Type 1 technology whenever
- possible, even to the point of converting available TrueType fonts to Type 1
- fonts. I happen to have Metamorphosis and BitFont, which I have used to convert
- the TrueType versions of Chicago, Geneva, Monaco and New York into Type 1, with
- corresponding bitmaps of various sizes. I also run ATM 2.0.3.
- All my *LaserWriter* fonts are Adobe Type 1 (as provided with ATM and with
- Adobe Plus Pack). Also I avail of every ooportunity to purchase Adobe Fonts *On
- Special*: I have Eras, Hiroshige, Garamond, and will acquire more as good
- offers come along.

- From: Dave Virga <virgad@CC.IMS.DISA.MIL>
- Subject: FTP Programs for the Mac (Summary)
-
- Many thanks to all who responded to my plea for a Mac Command Line FTP
- program (Thomas Garcia, Sam McLane, Stephen Pendergast, Jon Pugh,
- John Rosborough, Larry Rosenstein, Ron Rushing, Thomas Russ, Brad Stone,
- and John Verrault). Wouldn't you know it, but I had one under my nose
- all the time (sheepish grin)! Oh well, I still learned a lot.
-
- For my needs, the NCSA and BYU Telnet programs fit best. Again, my goal
- is a program that provides as full a Command Line Interface as I could
- get, using the standard user-level command set (ie, dir, cd, get, put,
- mget, mput, show, bye). I want this because my FTP connections tend to
- be too slow for my level of patience. One of the most visible time
- thieves that I've noticed is the directory list downloads that the
- windowed FTP programs automatically do. As I mentioned before, the
- Sumex Infomac digestdirectory listing takes a long time to download, and
- all I'm really interested in is the latest few issues.
- So, for my needs, I'm very happy with these programs.
-
- My recommendations for the net:
- - If you have a short-distance and responsive FTP connection, look into
- the freeware Fetch and the grossly-underpriced shareware Xferit. They
- both have nice Macified interfaces that will make the whole FTP process
- extremely easy and efficient.
- - If you are experiencing speed and throughput problems, try playing with
- the NCSA/BYU Telnet programs, and see if you can trim the process time
- down more to your liking/patience level. You get a complete set of
- user-level commands and a scrolling window, and very little else - but
- that should be enough.
- - If you need a full suite of TCP/IP programs, check out VersaTerm-PRO,
- version 3.6 (the latest as of yesterday). The FTP module works very
- well, and also integrates with the Telnet module.
-
- Here are brief descriptions of the six programs that were recommended:
-
- NCSA Telnet 2.4.12 and 2.4.18 (freeware)
- Available from ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu 128.187.2.20
- Recommended by several people, but I was never successful connecting
- to this host to get it. But I have a copy of version 2.4.5, and it
- has a CLI, so I assume that these newer versions do as well. It has
- a very plain CLI - you type commands, and get responses in the same
- window. There is no "FTP>" prompt, so don't wait for one - but it
- understood all of the commands that I threw at it.
-
- NCSA Telnet with BYU Extensions v2.5B (beta) (freeware)
- Available from bert.cs.byu.edu 128.187.2.20
- This version of NCSA Telnet has the same CLI as the original (NCSA)
- version - BYU doesn't appear to have modified this part.
-
- Fetch 2.1b3 (beta) (freeware)
- Available from dartvax.dartmouth.edu 129.170.16.4
- Fetch is a good, solid FTP program built around a Standard File
- interface. Its Command Line Interface consists of a menu pick which
- brings up a "Give me a command" requester; the host's response is
- put in the Fetch Transcript window. When I tried to enter my favorite
- command, "dir info-mac/digest/im/infomacv10-14*", it came back and
- said that it didn't understand the "DIR" command. Apparently, there's
- an even lower level set of FTP commands that I'm not familiar with, and
- Fetch's CLI uses those commands. Fetch's documentation does tell you
- of this - the CLI command is a straight pipe directly to the FTP server,
- and is provided as an "if nothing else works" option.
-
- Xferit 1.5b4 (beta) (shareware $10)
- Xferit is by far the best Macified FTP program that I've seen. When you
- connect with XFerit to an FTP site, it opens windows on your screen
- to represent directories on the ftp server, just like finder windows.
- Then you can select, or shift-select things on these windows and DRAG
- them to a folder in your hard disk, and those items will be copied
- automagically. Very nice!! Ten dollars is a pittance for the amount of
- work put into this program. The command line interface is the same as
- Fetch's - lowest level FTP, such as you would send with the normal level
- FTP "Quote" command. And again, the (superb) Xferit docs make that
- clear.
-
- Novell LAN Workplace for Macintosh (commercial)
- This program is part of the Novell Netware for Mac suite. I don't
- speak Novell, and so I haven't tried this. But, it was recommended....
-
- VersaTerm-PRO (commercial) Synergy Software
- This package is a very nice suite of TCP/IP programs, including Telnet
- (with DEC-VT and TEK emulations, among others), FTP Client and FTP
- Server modules. I use v3.5.1, but there's a new release out now (v3.6).
- The FTP Client doesn't support a CLI, but v3.6 does let you customize the
- directory list through the Filter option (on the popup menu). Basically
- it just restricts the list to the files which pass the filter. You also
- get a multiple selection Standard File type dialog, which allows you to
- select all the files you want to download; then pressing the Download
- button brings them all down in one swell foop.

-
- The information that is stored in the CD's header is, in fact, a serial number,
- plus a table of contents.
-
- Some (audio) CD players (including mine :-), which is how I know about this)
- access this serial number to recognize the disc and retrieve various
- disc-specific information: the name, your preferred listening level, the fact
- that you never want to hear track 3. The information is stored in the CD
- player's RAM, though, and not on the disc. You must teach it the things you
- want it to remember.
-
- Given the massive amount of storage on a CD, it's a shame "they" didn't see fit
- to store the disc's name (and also the names of the tracks) on the disc.
- Perhaps some day.

-
- The program uses the SLFP (Serial Line Framing Protocol) to connect to a

-
- The PPP protocol is coming into wide use; Merit has already implemented it,

- 2) Which one is better? Whiteknight? Smartcom II?

-
- Hello. My boss just bought a LaserJet IIIp to use with his Mac SE.
- According to the manual that comes with the Appletalk kit for hooking the
- two together, we need to buy an HP Postscript cartridge (part #33439Q).
- I called a local computer store and they quoted me a price of $695. That

- there other, compatible cartridges available? If so, which ones are of

- Hi, y'all!
-
- My brother-in-law is having some trouble printing, and asked if I would
- post his query for him; so here 'tis:
-
- % We have a favor to ask of you. We have a printing problem and I was
- % wondering if there might be anyone out in MAC land who might have
- % experienced the same problem and what solution they came up with.
- % Here's the problem.
- %
- % Belle is putting together a technical manual for this company that
- % uses alot of very specific fonts. e.g. Stone Sans, Sans Seriff,
- % Optima Bold Oblique, to name a few for the text, and
- % Letter Gothic Bold for the screen layouts. I have the Outline fonts
- % in the system folder(Outside of the extension folder) and the bitmapped
- % fonts in the resource/font folder in Suitcase. (I'm not sure I'm
- % using the terms Outline and Bitmap correctly. I'm hoping you'll
- % know what I mean anyway.)
- %
- % The screen layouts were created using MacDraw II and pasted on the
- % document as PICTURES under Word5.0. The document is printed on
- % QMS PS410 laser printer.
- %
- % The problem is, during printing, in some of the screen layouts, the
- % last few columns on the right of the text within the screen is chopped off
- % even though the screen boundaries remained intact.
- %
- % - Could this be a printer memory problem? (I have 2 meg on the printer
- % and 8 meg on the SE30) or
- % - could it be that the printer is not recognizing the font for the screen
- % layouts(Letter Gothic Bold) or
- % - could it be that I don't have the proper setup or
- % - could it be that the QMS PS410 is not totally compatible with the SE30?
- %
- % I'm hoping that you or someone out there might have the answer.

- All,
- Someone told me there may be a public domain tool that automatically
- turnes on/off the CPU instruction cache on a Quadra depending on whether

- That would be great; it saves me lot of work of repeatedly turning the cache

- Thanks again, and to be fair all around, I must say that the Excel
- review was written by a local consultant and beta tester, Howard Hansen
- of the Oasis Group, and the ClarisWorks review was written by Matt
- Wall of Swarthmore. Thanks to both of them!
-
- Also, as I said before, MacWEEK really does have different information.
- I get a lot of the same press releases and the like, but since TidBITS
- contains only what _I_ think is interesting (or can be persuaded to
- think is interesting), I cull out a lot of the less cool stuff. The
- only drawback to that is that I can't always predict what people want
- to hear about, so for instance, I haven't said anything about Claris
- releasing the System 7-savvy MacDraw Pro, because it was hovering
- on the edge of interesting and couldn't begin to compete with Newton

- If you have unlimited time, I recommend that you read both. If you

- Subject: Yet more Mac Word 5 to DOS Word Perfect 5.1
-
- I figured out what was causing Word 5 and Apple File Exchange to choke on my
- file translations: too many fonts in my system. When the conversion is made, it
- goes to RTF as an intermediary step, and there is a bit of RTF code for each
- font in my system. When I manually cut out 3/4 of that part of my RTF document,
- AFE works fine. When I remove a big chunk of fonts from my system, Word does
- fine.
-
- Crashing my machine doesn't seem like a nice way to respond to this
- situation, I'd rather Word said something like: "There are too many fonts in
- your system for the RTF protocol."
-
-
- I do have a lot of fonts, but they're all Adobe Type 1, most are just big
- families, like the full Adobe Caslon, Garamond, Minion, and Utopia families
- (including expert series; that's a lot of fonts right there!) and the numbered
- Helvetica's and Univers series. I'm irritated that in order to get my documents
- to translate AT ALL to Word Perfect I must compromise the fonts I have loaded.
- (I know, upgrade to Suitcase 2.0; I like the way System 7 handles fonts and
- don't want to spend moolah to work around what appears to be a Microsoft
- problem.)
-
- I checked my Word 5 manuals, and can't find anything on limitations of number
- of fonts, or RTF limitations. Anyone else have a similar experience?
